On August 3, 2023, the Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) conducted the latest selection of candidates for Express Entry. In this particular round (Express Entry Draw #261), IRCC invited 1500 applicants under a category that prioritizes skilled professionals in trade occupations. To receive an ITA (Invitation to Apply), candidates needed to have a minimum Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) score of 388.
Since IRCC announced the new category-based selection system for Express Entry, this has been the first-ever draw in the category of Trade Occupations.
What is Express Entry System?
Express Entry serves as a comprehensive application management system that oversees the Federal Skilled Worker Program, the Canadian Experience Class, and the Federal Skilled Trades Program.
Applicants in the Express Entry pool undergo assessment based on various human capital factors, such as work experience, occupation, language proficiency, education, and age. In other words, these factors are used to calculate their Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) score, which determines their competitiveness against other candidates in the pool. Consequently, those with higher CRS scores have a better chance of receiving invitations for permanent residency application.
Notably, as of May 31, the Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) introduced new category-based selection criteria. As a matter of fact, rather than relying solely on a high CRS score, these criteria prioritize specific attributes. The six new categories for Express Entry candidates are as follows:
- Healthcare
- Science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) professions
- Trades, including carpenters, plumbers, and contractors
- Transport
- Agriculture and agri-food
- Strong French-language proficiency
