This draw encompassed candidates from all immigration programs. In the 279th round, the cut-off score stood at 546 points, marking an increase of four points from the previous General draw. The tie-breaking criterion for this round was set at December 31, 2023, at 18:23:22 UTC. As of January 9, 2024, the Express Entry pool comprised 212,157 registered profiles. In the preceding year, Canada issued 110,266 ITAs through the Express Entry system.

What is Express Entry?
Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) utilize the Express Entry system as an effective mechanism to process applications for permanent residency. The assessment of applicants is conducted through the Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) score, taking into account various factors such as work experience, occupation, language proficiency, educational background, age, and more. Generally, individuals with higher CRS scores have a greater probability of receiving an Invitation to Apply (ITA) for permanent residency.
Furthermore, the Express Entry system has introduced a new feature known as category-based selection draws. These draws specifically target candidates with specific professional backgrounds or other highly sought-after qualifications. There are six distinct categories for which potential applicants may be eligible:
- Healthcare
- Science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) professions
- Trades, including carpenters, plumbers, and contractors
- Transport
- Agriculture and agri-food
- Proficiency in the French language
Express Entry in 2024
The Immigration Levels Plan for 2024-2026 reveals that Canada aims to admit 110,000 new permanent residents through Express Entry in 2024.
This represents a notable increase from the 82,880 Express Entry candidates that IRCC targeted in 2023. However, it’s important to note that the high target does not guarantee that all invited candidates in 2024 will be granted permanent residency by the end of the year. Some, particularly those invited later in the year, may arrive in 2025, as IRCC maintains a service standard of six months to issue a final decision on Express Entry applications for permanent residency. In 2023, IRCC issued over 100,000 Invitations to Apply (ITAs) to Express Entry candidates.
