On August 2, 2023, the Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) organized the most recent selection of candidates for Express Entry. In this particular round (Express Entry Draw #260), 800 applicants received invitations under a category that prioritizes proficiency in the French language. The minimum Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) score required to receive an invitation in this draw was 435.
What is Express Entry?
Express Entry is a comprehensive application management system that oversees the Federal Skilled Worker Program, the Canadian Experience Class, and the Federal Skilled Trades Program.
Applicants within the Express Entry pool are assessed based on various human capital factors, including their work experience, occupation, language proficiency, education, and age. As a matter of fact, these factors are used to calculate their Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) score, and then they compete against other candidates in the pool. Therefore, individuals with higher CRS scores are more likely to receive invitations to apply for permanent residency.
Recently, as of May 31, the Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) has introduced new category-based selection criteria. Instead of solely relying on a high CRS score, these new criteria prioritize specific attributes. The six new categories for Express Entry candidates are:
- Healthcare
- Science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) professions
- Trades, including carpenters, plumbers, and contractors
- Transport
- Agriculture and agri-food
- Strong French-language proficiency
