On August 1, 2023, Marc Miller, the new Minister of Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship Canada (IRCC), unveiled the introduction of occupation-specific Express Entry draws targeting professionals employed in skilled trades occupations. Commencing this week, the Express Entry system will prioritize candidates with expertise in trades such as plumbing, carpentry, and welding, with the aim of attracting skilled talent to Canada’s thriving construction sector. These selection rounds will be ongoing throughout the year, in addition to the regular general invitations.
Express Entry is Canada’s primary application management system for individuals seeking permanent immigration through various streams, including the Federal Skilled Worker Program, the Canadian Experience Class, the Federal Skilled Trades Program, and a segment of the Provincial Nominee Program.
On May 31, 2023, Sean Fraser, who previously served as the Minister of Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship, revealed the introduction of category-based selection, a novel approach designed to welcome skilled newcomers with work experience in priority jobs as permanent residents. The Government of Canada made changes to the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act in June 2022 to enable the selection of immigrants based on key attributes that align with the country’s economic priorities.
