On September 27, 2023, Canada unveiled its initial set of invitations for positions in agriculture and agri-food industries under the Express Entry system’s category-based selection. This initiative is geared toward individuals with experience in agriculture and agri-food sectors, encompassing roles like agricultural service contractors, farm supervisors, and butchers. Canada’s Express Entry system creates a more straightforward pathway for individuals skilled in these vital fields. By giving priority to skilled newcomers with prior work experience in agriculture and agri-food occupations, the government aims to address the growing demand for talent and fill crucial positions in farming and food processing. Throughout the year, category-based selection rounds as well as general and program-specific invitation rounds will continue to take place.
Marc Miller, Minister of Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship, along with Lawrence MacAulay, Minister of Agriculture and Agri-Food, have jointly revealed that the first round of invitations for agriculture and agri-food occupations through category-based selection within the Express Entry system will take place this week. The aim is to facilitate the attraction of professional workers in the agriculture and agri-food sector throughout the country.
Express Entry System
Express Entry is a system employed by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) to efficiently manage permanent residency applications. This system evaluates applicants based on the Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) score, which takes into account various factors like work history, occupation, language proficiency, educational background, age, and more. Essentially, individuals with higher CRS scores have a better chance of receiving an Invitation to Apply (ITA) for permanent residency.
Additionally, a unique feature within the Express Entry system, known as category-based selection rounds, focuses on candidates with specific professional backgrounds or other desirable characteristics. There are six distinct categories under which potential candidates may qualify:
- French-language proficiency
- Healthcare occupations
- Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) occupations
- Trade occupations
- Transport occupations
- Agriculture and agri-food occupations
The following occupations are included in the Agriculture and agri-food category:
- Contractors and supervisors, landscaping, grounds maintenance and horticulture services – 82031 (2021 NOC code)
- Agricultural service contractors and farm supervisors – 82030 (2021 NOC code)
- Butchers- retail and wholesale – 63201 (2021 NOC code)
