Now that the travel restrictions are lifted, Canada is willing to welcome more newcomers this summer. From foreign workers to international students, people from different categories will arrive in the following months.
Overall, despite the restrictions of the pandemic, Canada still received a considerable amount of newcomers in 2021. And these efforts will continue in 2022. Even more, now that most of the pandemic travel restrictions have been lifted.
PR and Newcomers in Canada Invited During Q1 – 2022
According to IRCC, under their Immigration Levels Plan 2022-2024, Canada should welcome about 432,000 new permanent residents this year.
Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) data shows that they are now prioritizing applications under the Federal Skilled Worker Program (FSWP). Wich most applicants under this category are living abroad.
During the first quarter of this year, Canada welcomed almost 114,000 new permanent residents. Some of these newcomers lived in Canada and were waiting to change their temporary status to permanent status. Also, some of them were outside of Canada, waiting for their PR to travel.
To sum up, the results of the Q1 in 2022 are almost 60% more than the 74,000 permanent residents during Q1 2021. It is a significant achievement for the country.
More International Students Could Arrive in Summer
As you may know, international students are a vast statistic for newcomers in Canada. Overall, between July and September 2021, about 207,000 international students arrived in Canada. While in the first quarter of 2022, nearly 90,000 international students landed in the country. It means a 30% increase compared to the same period in 2021.
According to this 30% increase in the first quarter, we could say that almost 270,000 international students will arrive in Canada for the summer of 2022. This statistic will undoubtedly influence the number of newcomers in 2022.
Temporary Work Permits to be Approved in Q3
Overall, Canada has two categories for welcoming newcomers as temporary foreign workers.
- The Temporary Foreign Worker Program (TFWP) looks to address labour shortages. It is a small category.
- The International Mobility Program (IMP). The biggest category to issue work permits for several purposes in Canada.
During the first quarter of 2022, Canada welcomed about 28,000 newcomers under the TFWP, and most of them were living overseas.
On the other hand, as long as the IMP offers different work permits, most of the candidates may be living in Canada before getting their work permits.
In fact, the primary source of work permit holders under the IMP category are international students who obtain a Post-Graduation Work Permit after finishing their studies. Overall, individuals under this category will be a significant stream for this year’s Q3 newcomers in Canada.
Combining TFWP and IMP expectations, we could say that it will be between 110,000 and 120,000 new work permits under these categories by July and September. So, again, it is a significant stream for welcoming newcomers this year.
Over 500,000 Newcomers Will Arrive in Summer
To meet the Immigration Levels Plan, Canada expects to welcome about 520,000 or more newcomers with permanent residence, study permits or work permits this summer. It means a significant number in just three months, but it is a good expectation for newcomers and future permanent residents all across the country.
