Congratulations, graduates! You may now apply for Post Graduation Work Permit (PGWP) to gain Canadian work experience; and eventually qualify to apply for permanent residency (PR). But, this is just the beginning of an exciting new experience in Canada.
Live your dreams in Canada with a PGWP.
However, before proceeding with your Post Graduation Work Permit application, here are some guides to help you navigate through the process:
Eligibility to Work after Program Completion: You may continue working for your employer after your program has ended, provided that you have not received your completion or graduation letter from your college or university. If you have applied for or received your study permit approval on or before October 7, 2022, you may work full-time. Otherwise, you may only work part-time (up to 20 hours per week) until you apply for your PGWP.
“You can work up to 20 hours per week. You can work more than 1 job to make up these hours as long as you continue to meet the conditions of your study permit.“
IRCC, 2022
Apply for Spousal Open Work Permit Extension: Currently employed? Then your spouse and dependent children can apply for an extension with you. This will allow them to continue studying or working without any hassle.
PGWP Application and Temporary Resident Visa: Your PGWP application does not automatically extend your temporary resident visa (TRV). You must apply for a TRV extension separately once you obtain your new status in Canada.
Strategize your PR Application: Your PGWP can affect your ability to qualify for certain PR programs, such as: the Federal Skilled Worker Program, Canadian Experience Class, and Federal Skilled Trades Program. Your PGWP can get you 1 year work experience and can help you land a job under TEER 2-3.
