Canada offers multiple ways for foreign workers to apply for a work visa to work in Canada. The most common ways are through an “open work permit” or a “closed work permit”. An open work permit lets the individual work for any employer in Canada, whereas a closed work permit is tied to a specific employer. To get a closed work permit, an individual must get LMIA.
What is LMIA?
LMIA, or Labour Market Impact Assessment, is a document issued by Canada’s labour market. The document assesses the impact that hiring a worker outside Canada would have on the labour market. To successfully receive a positive LMIA, the employer must submit a series of forms that demonstrate that the company, despite their best efforts, could not find any local talent from Canada’s citizens and permanent residents. Getting a positive LMIA letter is the first and most important step to securing a job in Canada with a closed work permit.
What Steps Need to be Followed
After the employer applies for the LMIA and gets approved, they provide the person applying for the job with a valid job offer. The employer then gives the candidate the LMIA and NOC information related to the job. The candidate then applies for a work permit at the IRCC by providing the required documents and fees.
* In some cases, the applicant must undergo a medical examination and obtain a police clearance certificate. The certificate states that the applicant has not been accused or convicted of prior or current crimes.
How Long Does It Take?
The work permit and LMIA processing time varies based on multiple factors, such as the type of work, location and the specific application of each applicant. Generally, the process takes a few weeks to a few months.
Why Get a Work Permit
Getting approved for a work permit in Canada means you are a step closer to getting a Canadian permanent residency. Some Canadian permanent residency programs require Canadian work experience. The work experience can also be valuable in point system programs such as Express Entry. In that case, Canadian work experience would mean additional points that increase the chances of being selected.
