Canada has created new immigration streams for Ukrainians who want to move temporarily or permanently to the country. It is not a secret that Canada is one of the most immigrant-friendly countries worldwide. In fact, it has the third-largest movement of Ukrainians, with about 1.4 million people.
Given all the situation in Ukraine, the Government of Canada is providing a Canada-Ukraine Authorization for Emergency Travel. There are no limits on the number of Ukrainians who wish to apply.
Also, in the following weeks, IRCC will implement a unique Family Sponsorship program for permanent residency. The Government will release more details about it in the next weeks.
In addition, all Ukrainians who arrive in Canada with these measurements can apply for an open work permit. Therefore, they can stay and work all across Canada for any employee. It is an extra effort to the previous open work permit that Canada already made available to Ukrainians who are in Canada.
Consequently, Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada said that more information about temporary and permanent residence programs, and processing times, will come in the following weeks.

- Canada allows unvaccinated Ukrainians to enter the country. To do it, they need to have a temporary resident visa or a temporary permit. Also, they can have a written statement to prove their Canadian PR is approved.
- IRCC is prioritizing applications for people living in Ukraine who want to study, work or immigrate to Canada.
- The Canadian Government is also helping to process travel documents for Canadians who wish to return from Ukraine. So, it is issuing single-journey travel documents for immediate family members of Canadian citizens and permanent residents who don’t hold valid passports.
- Ukrainians in Canada can extend their status as visitors, students, or workers. Canada aims to prioritize renewals of work and study permits and develop a guideline for Ukrainians to apply for those permits within Canada.
- Ukrainians temporary residents who obtain a job offer can remain in Canada and start working while waiting for their work permit application.
Open Work Permits For Ukrainians
To keep helping Ukrainians, IRCC will give open work permits to Ukrainian visitors, students, and workers in Canada who cannot go back to their country. In addition, for certain travel and immigration documents, fees will be waived. IRCC will provide more details in the following weeks.
