The Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) has introduced a new process for spousal Temporary Resident Visas (TRVs) that significantly reduces the waiting time to just 30 days. This applies to applicants who have already applied for permanent residency in Canada. Consequently, applicants do not have to remain in their home countries any more while waiting for IRCC’s decision; they can instead come to Canada and await the completion of the processing.
This faster procedure enables Canadian citizens or permanent residents with spouses and dependents abroad to be reunited with their families more quickly, allowing them to begin establishing themselves in their communities sooner. Nevertheless, it is crucial to bear in mind that individuals on a TRV can only engage in work or study in Canada once they have become permanent residents or have obtained a valid work or study permit.
What are the new benefits for Applicants?
The processing time for permanent residence applications through family class sponsorship is typically 12 months. However, recent changes in the processing of spousal Temporary Resident Visas (TRVs), which now take about 30 days, and the service standard of 60 days for work permits set by the IRCC (Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship Canada), have significantly shortened the overall wait time. Consequently, it is now possible for a sponsored spouse, partner, or dependent child to arrive in Canada and begin working while awaiting the decision on their permanent resident application, resulting in a potential timeline of as little as three months (90 days).
Any Canadian citizen or permanent resident who can commit to a financial undertaking agreement, taking responsibility for the sponsored family for a number of years, may be eligible to sponsor a spouse, common-law partner, or conjugal partner for permanent residence. The financial requirements for sponsorship change if there are dependent children who also need support.
