No Upfront Medical Exam Required for Express Entry

The Government of Canada made alterations to the medical exam requirement for Express Entry applicants on September 29, 2023. Starting from October 1, 2023, applicants are no longer obligated to undergo upfront medical exam when submitting their applications. Instead, they are recommended to wait for specific instructions before proceeding with the medical exam. As a matter of fact, applicants are now required to complete their medical exams within 30 days of receiving these instructions. This change is intended to streamline the application process and ensure that medical assessments are conducted at the right stage of the process.

Medical Inadmissibility

To enter Canada, meeting all inadmissibility rules is essential, and this includes adhering to medical inadmissibility criteria. Medical inadmissibility applies to anyone seeking to visit, study, work, or settle permanently in Canada. There are three key reasons for medical inadmissibility:

  • Danger to Public Health: Your application may be declined if your health condition poses a risk to the public health of Canada. In other words, it considers whether you have certain infectious diseases, such as active tuberculosis or syphilis, or if you’ve been in close contact with individuals with infectious diseases.
  • Danger to Public Safety: If your health condition jeopardizes public safety, your application may be denied. This assessment depends on the results of your immigration medical examination and considers factors like the risk of sudden incapacity or unpredictable and violent behavior.
  • Excessive Demand on Health or Social Services: Your application may be refused if your health condition is deemed likely to place an excessive demand on health or social services. Your condition is considered to cause an excessive demand if the required health or social services would negatively affect service wait times in Canada or if the cost of managing your health condition exceeds the established excessive demand cost threshold.
