The Outland Sponsorship Program allows a Canadian citizen or Permanent Resident to sponsor their spousal/common-law partner residing outside Canada to get PR status and live permanently. Under this program, the sponsored person can travel abroad while waiting for their final decision. Applicants residing in Canada may also choose to apply for outland spousal sponsorship if need it. There are requirements for both the Canadian sponsored and the foreign sponsored.
The marriage must have been legally performed in Canada. If it was abroad, it must be legally recognized in the country where it took place and in Canada.
If the marriage is not considered legally valid, the couple still may apply for common-law or conjugal partners.
