Inland Spousal Sponsorship Temporary Work Permit

This program allows a Canadian citizen or permanent resident to sponsor their common-in-law or spouse for the Permanent Residence. It is only for couples living together in Canada, where the spouse is a temporary resident, as a worker, student or visitor. Through this program, the spouse or common-in-law partner can apply for an Open Work Permit while waiting for the application process. Usually, this application takes one year to be completed. With an Open Work Permit, the person can work for any Canadian employer for around two years.

Eligibility criteria for the program:
  • Have a permanent residence application in process under the Spousal Sponsorship work permit.
  • Must have the same residence address as the sponsor
  • Have a temporary resident status as a visitor, student or worker.
  • Meet all eligibility requirements under spousal sponsorship.
  • Sponsor requirements
  • You must be at least 18 years old.
  • You must be a Canadian Permanent Residence or Canadian citizen.
  • You can’t be in prison, bankrupt or under a removal order.
  • You can provide Financial support for three years.

Sponsored person requirements:

Must be at least 18 years old Pass all background, security and medical checks.

Nature of the relationship

You have to prove the relationship between the sponsor and the sponsored person qualifies under the following categories:

  • Spouse: Legally married
  • Common-in-law partner: Must have lived together for at least one year
  • Conjugal partner
Support Documentation
  • Evaluation questionnaire
  • Marriage Certificate
  • Married invitation and photos
  • Birth certificates or adoption papers for children
  • Proof of marriage registration
